In many Indian families, kundli matching for marriage is an important step before finalising a match. It compares the birth charts of the boy and girl to check compatibility. Here is a simple explanation.

What Is Guna Milan in Kundli Matching for Marriage?
Guna milan (Ashtakoot milan) compares eight factors called kootas. Together they carry a maximum of 36 points (gunas).
The 8 kootas
- Varna (1 point) – spiritual compatibility
- Vashya (2) – mutual attraction and influence
- Tara (3) – health and well-being
- Yoni (4) – physical compatibility
- Graha Maitri (5) – mental compatibility and friendship
- Gana (6) – temperament
- Bhakoot (7) – family welfare and finances
- Nadi (8) – health and progeny
What score is considered good?
- Below 18 – usually not recommended
- 18 to 24 – acceptable
- 25 to 32 – good match
- 33 to 36 – very good match
Many families also check doshas such as Manglik dosha and Nadi dosha. An experienced astrologer can explain remedies if needed.
Kundli Matching Is One Part of a Good Marriage
Guna milan is helpful, but values, education, family background and mutual understanding matter just as much. At Shubamm Marriage Bureau we look at all of these together.

How Each Koota Affects Married Life
Each of the eight kootas looks at a different side of married life. Varna (1 point) looks at work nature and attitude, while Vashya (2 points) is about mutual attraction and influence. Tara (3 points) relates to health and well-being, and Yoni (4 points) to physical compatibility. Graha Maitri (5 points) compares the mental nature of the couple through the lords of their moon signs, and Gana (6 points) looks at temperament – Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa. Bhakoot (7 points) is linked to family welfare and finances, and Nadi (8 points), the highest-scoring koota, is linked to health and children.
Because Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most points, a dosha in either of them gets the most attention from astrologers. A low score in one koota does not mean the whole match is weak – the total and the full chart should be read together.
Common Doshas: Manglik, Nadi and Bhakoot
Manglik dosha is linked to the position of Mars in the birth chart. Many families look for a Manglik match for a Manglik boy or girl, and astrologers also check for cancellation factors in the chart. Nadi dosha arises when both partners have the same Nadi, and Bhakoot dosha comes from certain moon-sign combinations. In many cases these doshas are considered cancelled by other factors, which is why a detailed reading by an experienced astrologer is better than relying on the score alone.
A Balanced Way to Use Kundli Matching
In our experience, families who get the best results use kundli matching as one input, not the only one. We suggest this order:
- First, check the basics – values, education, profession, family background and where the couple will live.
- Then match the kundli – use our free Kundli matching tool for a quick guna score.
- Consult an astrologer if needed – especially if there is a Manglik, Nadi or Bhakoot dosha.
- Let the couple meet – a short meeting or video call tells you a lot about compatibility.
Families from Hoshiarpur, home of the Bhrigu Samhita tradition, often give kundli matching special importance – read more on our page for the marriage bureau in Hoshiarpur. For help preparing details for the kundli, see our guide on how to write a marriage biodata.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can kundli be matched without the exact birth time?
An approximate guna score can be calculated from the date and place of birth, but the exact time gives a more accurate reading, especially for Manglik dosha and the full chart.
Is a high guna score a guarantee of a happy marriage?
No. A good score is encouraging, but understanding, respect and shared values matter just as much. Use the score along with family background, education and a personal meeting.
What if the guna score is below 18?
Many astrologers advise against a match below 18, but some doshas may be cancelled by other factors in the chart. Consult an experienced astrologer, and look at the rest of the match – values, education and family – before deciding.
Do all families in Punjab follow kundli matching?
No. Many Hindu Punjabi families give it importance, while most Sikh families do not. We follow each family’s preference.
How many gunas are needed for marriage?
Usually 18 or more out of 36 is considered acceptable.
Is birth time necessary?
Yes, the correct birth time gives a more accurate result.
Is kundli matching compulsory?
It depends on each family’s beliefs. Many families use it along with other factors.
