What Is Kundli Matching?
Kundli matching (also called kundli milan, gun milan or horoscope matching) compares the birth charts of the boy and the girl to see how well their temperaments, health and family life may fit together according to Vedic astrology. The most common method in North India is Ashtakoota Milan, which gives a score out of 36 gunas.
Kundli Matching by Name vs by Date of Birth
There are two ways to match kundlis online:
- By name only: the first sound of each name is used to estimate the nakshatra (birth star). This is quick but only approximate. It is useful when birth details are not known.
- By date of birth, time and place: the exact Moon sign and nakshatra are calculated from the birth details. This is far more accurate and is what families should use before a final decision.

What Details Do You Need?
- Full name of the boy and the girl
- Date of birth
- Exact time of birth (from the birth certificate or hospital record if possible)

What Score Is Good for Marriage?
- Below 18: traditionally not recommended without an astrologer’s advice.
- 18 to 24: acceptable or average match.
- 25 to 32: good match.
- 33 to 36: excellent match.
